I met and spoke to three of the 4 heads just earlier today about the third annual Governor’s Island Art Fair. They are a “non-profit arts organization” officially according to the IRS they say. Messrs. Ernie Sandidge, Zito, and Jack Robinson (who couldn’t make it because he was stranded on the island) along with Nix make up 4heads. These four people have been artists for some time and were curating shows until they decided to organize a larger art fair and ended up on Governor’s Island.

The art fair itself is out of this world. In the interview they mention some of the art that you can see which includes a roving “frilly bob” on the lawn, live music, and some 150 installations. They give each artist an entire room of the houses that sit on Governor’s Island and allow them to do whatever they please. The fair will run every weekend in September.

Just four people who wanted to make a positive change and did it. And the place where they did is incredible. Governor’s Island is one the city’s greatest gems and art fairs like this one are exactly what this city and that island need. It’s absolutely incredible that we have witnessed such a space grow from (as Zito put it) “Warfare to art fair.”

The fair starts on Saturday the 4th of September, will run every weekend through the 26th and is accessible by ferry from pier 6.
