I love having NYU Grads on the show. Even if it’s most likely they majored in a subject completely different from what I’m studying, it still gives me confidence that there are amazing opportunities for me once I get my diploma next May. Next May? Time flies too fast.

Because New York City is central to so many hallmark events of LGBT history, it’s easy to think that tolerance runs in every New Yorker’s blood. But then you remember that marriage equality only just passed in New York state and that New York City is made up of a huge mix of cultures; tolerance and acceptance are not a given, even here.

Rashaad Ernesto Green’s Gun Hill Road is all about overcoming struggle. Whether it’s Enrique accepting his son’s transformation, how the three of them work to get back to a family dynamic where the father is present, how Angela lets go of her lover for the sake of her family, all the characters are working through massive changes. Step by step, they do their best to make it through because despite all the tension, they all love each other.

Gun Hill Road opens this Friday, August 5th. For more information about which theaters are showing the film, visit
