When I was in 3rd grade, we had a small library of books in one of the corners of the classroom. It was full of pleasure reads we were supposed to take out as much as possible during the school year; one book a week was the ultimate goal. My classmates and I were always asking each other for recommendations and competing to see who would read the thicker books the fastest.

That’s not the kind of reader-friendly environment you hear about in many public schools these days. As funds get slashed, books are scarce in school buildings. Read This are a non-profit organization working to get books back onto those empty shelves, at schools and even to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Reading isn’t just important because doing it well gives you a better chance at succeeding at school; it’s fun. No one should miss out because they don’t have books nearby when others have plenty that are just gathering dust.
